About Kazuhiro Sugiyama
When I first saw one of his photographs after visiting his home, I knew he was the person I wanted to marry. More than five decades have passed since he first picked up a camera. Without relying on elaborate techniques or artificial effects, he continues to photograph nature as he encounters it. Perhaps it is his instinctive desire to capture people and landscapes that drew him to the world of photography. He says that what makes photography fascinating is the encounter with a moment that can never be repeated. For him, it does not matter what others may think of a photograph. What matters is whether the image moves him—whether it is something he truly wants to share with others. When that happens, he releases the shutter without hesitation. It may be a fleeting change in clouds, grasses, or trees on a mountain above 2,000 meters, or an unexpected expression on a person’s face. When a moment moves him, he captures it. He believes that behind everything we see lies a deeper world waiting to be discovered. His photographs seek to capture those fleeting moments in the long history of our planet—a world that has existed since ancient times and continues to expand through the lives of human beings.
